Supporting the implementation of Slovakia's Migration Strategy through an Action Plan

The European Commission is supporting the Slovak Republic in developing a detailed Action Plan for its National Migration Strategy.

Context

Slovakia faces challenges in operationalizing its National Strategy for Asylum and Migration Management amidst complex coordination demands across ministries and agencies. This project addresses the need for a well-coordinated system to manage migration sustainably, incorporating security, economic, and humanitarian dimensions as stipulated by EU policy priorities such as the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. In this context, the Action Plan that will translate the strategic objectives of the newly adopted National Strategy into concrete, measurable and feasible steps and to support effective communication of migration topics by the entities concerned.

Support delivered

Key activities include:

  • Analysis and mapping of actors: This phase involves reviewing the current National Migration Strategy and soliciting input from various stakeholders. Key areas and relevant actors are identified, establishing a foundation for their involvement in subsequent phases.
  • Definition of objectives: Through management consultations and group meetings, strategic objectives are defined and approved. This phase ensures that any gaps in strategic objectives within the current strategy are addressed and aligned with the stakeholders' insights.
  • Facilitated roundtables and complementary consultations: These platforms bring together diverse stakeholders, including ministries, public institutions, NGOs, academia, local governments, and migrant communities to ensure the Action plan is practical and feasible.
  • Capacity building and training: A series of tailored training programs will be delivered to strengthen the institutional capacities of Slovak entities. This includes developing skills for better communication of migration issues and understanding the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The training will also enhance abilities to implement and monitor the Action Plan effectively.

Expected results

The project aims to create a robust framework for Slovakia's migration management that simplifies coordination, aligns with EU standards, promotes social cohesion, and ensures better communication of migration policies. This initiative not only strengthens governance but also enhances the migration landscape in Slovakia, benefitting both the local society and migrants.
