VIRTB mRNA vaccine development for tuberculosis by Certest Biotec

Project

The project aims to develop a novel mRNA-based vaccine against tuberculosis, enhancing existing vaccination strategies through advanced biotechnological approaches. Led by Certest Biotec in Zaragoza, the initiative focuses on the development of inhaled mRNA vaccines designed to improve immune response and target the lungs more effectively.

The project is supported with EUR 1.3 million under the PERTE for Vanguard Health within the Recovery and Resilience Facility. It combines industrial research and academic collaboration, involving the University of Zaragoza and the University of the Basque Country to develop lipid nanoparticle formulations and optimise vaccine delivery.

The project is currently in the research and preclinical development phase, with promising results demonstrating strong immune responses. It is expected to contribute to the advancement of mRNA technologies and strengthen Spain’s position in biomedical innovation and infectious disease prevention.
