The investment includes putting into operation two prototype electric trains, as well as six stable battery chargers in train stations in Bjelovar, Virovitica, Osijek, Varaždin, Pula and Split Predgrađe. Out of total investment of €17.1 million, the Recovery and Resilience Facility supports this project with 13.3 million.
The aim of this project is to avoid costly investments in electrification of lines and maintenance of the overhead contact line. This innovation enables sustainable rail transport, reduces noise and greenhouse gas emissions, and increases the energy efficiency of the system, contributing to the development of green transportation in Croatia.
The two trains were produced by KONČAR – Electric vehicle company. The Electro-battery train was put into operation in May 2025 and will run on both non-electrified and electrified railway networks, while the Battery train was put into operation in September 2025 and runs between Virovitica and Bjelovar.
After putting into operation the battery charge in Split Predgrađe, the train will run between Split and Kaštel Stari, expected in December 2025.
