Transformation of agricultural waste into new business opportunities in Alcarràs.

  • Project

Alcarràs is the municipality with the highest number of livestock farms in Catalonia, housing approximately 40,000 cattle, including around 500 dairy cows across two farms.

The town is turning agricultural and livestock waste into a business opportunity with the creation of Alcarràs Bio Producers, a project financed by NextGenerationEU funds.

It involves 150 farming families collaborating to collectively valorize livestock manure and other agricultural, livestock, and forestry production surpluses.

This initiative aims to expand the current composting plant spanning two hectares, producing and marketing high-quality organic fertilizer.

Additionally, the initiative aligns with the BioHabCat project, Catalonia's bioeconomy hub, and a strategic transformative project for the regions of Lleida, the Pyrenees, and the Aran Valley.
