School 4.0: innovative schools, wiring, new classrooms and workshops (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.2)
Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan provides for updating school facilities into adaptable, flexible and digital learning environments, with technologically advanced workshops and a work-based learning process. This measure accelerates the digital transition of the Italian school system with four initiatives:
- Transformation of around 100 000 traditional classes into connected learning environments, with the introduction of related educational devices
- Creation of workshops for digital professions in the second cycle
- Digitalization of school administrations - Interior wiring cabling of approximately 40 000 school buildings and related devices.
The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 2.1 billion.
As part of this investment, this project is structured around several actions aimed, on one hand, at enhancing existing furniture with modular and flexible solutions, and on the other, at strengthening the technological and digital equipment already acquired through previous PON and PNSD funding.
The following resources are already available: touch screens (interactive whiteboards and digital boards) in nearly all classrooms, virtual reality devices, educational robotics kits, computers (both desktop and mobile workstations), tablets, mobile charging carts, access points, mobile chairs with wheels, and a substantial number of trapezoidal desks that allow for varied classroom configurations.
Part of this existing equipment will be integrated into the new learning environments, where physical spaces will be reorganized to be flexible, modular, and inclusive—creating functional settings tailored to different teaching activities and projects. These environments will engage students not only in individual or collective learning, but more importantly in research, collaboration, content creation, and reinterpretation through the use of digital languages.
The various actions will make it possible to create learning environments that ensure the educational success of every student, especially those with vulnerabilities or special educational needs, and serve as a means to prevent school dropout.
This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 400.000,00
