The Real-World Laboratories of the Energy Transition (Reallabore der Energiewende) are a central pillar of Germany’s energy research programme. Through this funding format, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) creates the conditions to test, validate and further develop new technologies, business models and regulatory approaches under real operating conditions.
Their purpose is to act as a bridge between the laboratory and the market: speeding up the market introduction of innovative technologies, reducing risks in investment decisions—especially for companies—and building public and stakeholder acceptance by demonstrating solutions in real-world settings. Projects that are highly practice-oriented and based on concrete applications are therefore supported.
The experience gathered in these projects can then be used by experts to help drive the profound transformation of Germany’s energy system towards climate neutrality. In this sense, Reallabore are a hands-on stress test for innovations on their path into everyday energy-sector deployment—and an important instrument for making the energy transition succeed.
The implementation of the measure shall be completed by 30. April 2026.
