Modernisation of irrigation systems in La Rioja for water and energy efficiency

Project

The project aims to modernise irrigation infrastructure in La Rioja, improving water efficiency, reducing energy consumption and enhancing the sustainability of agricultural production. It comprises two main interventions: (i) the modernisation of irrigation in the Sector 3º Tramo III of the Canal de la Margen Izquierda del río Najerilla, including a new storage reservoir and three photovoltaic plants; and (ii) the modernisation of irrigation systems in the Acequia de San Asensio (Sector I Tramo III), incorporating pressurised irrigation networks, a regulation reservoir and GPRS-based telecontrol systems.

The total investment amounts to approximately EUR 14 million, partly funded under the Recovery and Resilience Facility within the Plan for efficiency and sustainability in irrigation systems, with additional support from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD).

The project is currently under implementation, with some infrastructures already completed and others in final stages. It is expected to significantly reduce water and energy consumption, strengthen the resilience of the agricultural sector and support rural development in the region.
