The main goal of the Luka.DT project was the digitalization of existing business processes, transhipment and storage processes, and other services, as well as the digitalization of the service value chain of Luka Koper.

Project activities included collecting big data, introducing IoT solutions, AI, digital twin, advanced VR technologies, and automatising business processes. The introduced technologies enable more effective planning and scheduling of work tasks and the creation of work groups, more effective communication and coordination with carriers, and at the same time simulation and optimization of transhipment and storage work processes.

In practice, the solutions resulting from the two-year project affected many areas of work in the Port of Koper. A state-of-the-art simulator for moving cargo will greatly help with training and skills development of personnel. It creates a virtual learning environment where employees are trained on a range of devices, from cranes for moving shipping containers to operating a forklift. With the help of artificial intelligence, security has been strengthened in the Port of Koper, as the established system automatically detects and recognizes objects entering the port area. Also with the help of artificial intelligence, the Port of Koper can now more accurately predict whether an arriving container will be loaded onto a train or truck upon departure from the port. In this way, the number of ""dead moves"" of containers is reduced and costs are significantly reduced.

The project was carried out by a consortium of partners: Luka Koper d.d., ACTUAL I.T. d.o.o., IGEA d.o.o., ŠPICA INTERNATIONAL d.o.o., Solvesall d.o.o., and EMIGMA d.o.o. Project partners that developed advanced digital solutions had access to a suitable test environment and the possibility of building digital competences.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility provided funding of EUR 2.2 million. The total value of the project is EUR 4.9 million. The project was selected for co-funding in September 2022 and was finalised in March 2024.
