Investments in projects of urban regeneration, aimed at reducing situations of marginalization and social degradation (Mission 5 – Component 2, Investment 4)
Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan provides for investments in urban regeneration, to reduce marginalization and social degradation as well as to improve the social and environmental context of urban centres. The measure aims at supporting the reuse and re-functionalization of public areas and existing public building structures for purposes of public interest, and at improving the urban landscape through renovation of public buildings, with particular attention to the development of social, cultural, educational and didactic services, including sporting activities.
The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 2 billion.
As part of this investment, the project focuses on the redevelopment and enhancement of the area in front of the chiesa del Cuore Immacolato di Maria through aesthetic, functional, and environmental improvements. The intervention includes the replacement of the existing pavement with new flooring made of lava stone and white stone, and the creation of a landscaped flowerbed with small reinforced concrete retaining walls. Two benches made of iron profiles with Corten-type finish and lava stone bases will be installed, along with an additional bench integrated into the flowerbed wall.
The design also features two fountains—one with water and light displays and a smaller one for public use. Both fountains and the retaining walls will be clad in beige travertine. New step lights will be installed to improve nighttime visibility and ambiance. The project aims to enhance the area’s urban quality, expand its green and furniture elements, and use environmentally sustainable materials wherever possible.
In addition, the works include resurfacing and upgrading several streets—Via Michelangelo Buonarroti, Via Leonardo Da Vinci, Via Raffaello Sanzio, Via Tucidide, Via Plutarco, and Via Alceo—where the current pavement and sidewalks are worn and unsafe. These will be replaced with new interlocking colored concrete paving, forming geometric patterns inspired by the design already implemented on Via Aristotele.
All interventions are designed with durable, flexible, and resilient materials, ensuring high energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability of the infrastructure. This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 998.990,00.
