School building security and structural rehabilitation plan (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption.

In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings.

Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project consisting in structural interventions is part of this investment.

The I.T.C. "G. Sommeiller" and the L.S. "Galileo Ferraris" of Turin are housed in a historic building complex, subjected to "declaration of interest pursuant to Legislative Decree no.22 January 2004 n.42 and is owned by the Metropolitan City of Turin.

Built in the early '30s and completed in the '50s, the structure houses about 2,200 students in addition to teachers and school staff.

The building consists of two buildings built at different times, to which is added the realization of four external emergency stairs.

The first body consists of four structurally jointed blocks named: block A, B, C, D.

The second body, composed of a single block is called E.

The planned interventions include: static adaptation and seismic improvement of the complex.

Local interventions of safety against melting; adjustment fire regulations; adjustment of electrical and special systems; restoration of architectural elements subject to adaptation; removal and disposal of elements in FAV.

It will operate through local ringrossi of male walls, with the method of "shields and sew"; masonry plating with application of plaster with FRP networks; reinforcement with carbon fiber on reinforced concrete beams.

The electrical installations will be dismantled and rebuilt to allow the interventions at the first point, as well as to obtain the certifications useful for fire prevention.
