Hydrogen projects within the framework of IPCEIs - H2 Hy2Infra - H2S (Oldenburg)

Project

The IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) on Hydrogen was launched in 2020 to promote the market ramp-up of green hydrogen. In the course of this project 23 EU Member States as well as Norway collaborate to interlink European hydrogen projects and to benefit from spill-over effects at a European level. In the meantime, four IPCEI Hydrogen “waves” with 18 involved countries have been registered at the EU level. 1.4 billion EUR from the RRF support 14 of the overall 31 projects in Germany.

The German plan supports integrated hydrogen projects along the entire value chain. The measure is articulated around production, transport and storage of hydrogen, as well as on hydrogen applications (in industry and mobility). New electrolysis capability is being built to produce renewable hydrogen in locations where sufficient renewable electricity is available.

With a storage capacity of about 2 billion cubic meters of working gas in a total of 38 salt caverns, EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH is one of the major storage operators in the German-European natural gas market. Due to more than 50 years of expertise in the field of gas storage, the business unit Hydrogen of the EWE Group is located at EWE GASSPEICHER.

The project Clean Hydrogen Coastline H2 Storage (DE43B) has the objective to establish secure and open access green hydrogen storage of up to 1,500 Tonnes capacity for cross-sector applications in the Northwest of Germany. By a systemic integration of a large-scale underground storage facility a basic step for the transition of applications from several sectors towards emission free technologies can be achieved in the Northwest and further regions. Clean Hydrogen Coastline as part of the collaborative European approach Hy2Infra covers the entire value chain in the North-West of Germany with the projects DE07 for pipeline infrastructure, DE43B for storage capacity and DE43A for production capacity of green hydrogen.

The storage facility will be located in Huntorf near the city of Oldenburg. The project has started in August 2022. The storage facility is expected to be put in continuous operation by the end of 2027 for an operation period of 20 years.
