Investment in soft mobility (National Plan of Cycle Path)  (Mission 2 – Component 2:  Investment 4.1)

Italy’s Recovery and resilience plan provides for the construction of at least 565 km of cycling lanes in metropolitan areas and at least 746 km of tourist cycle paths. Cycle paths will facilitate first-mile and last-mile commuting – connecting locations in metropolitan areas to nearby railway or metro nodes, or universities to nearby railway or metro nodes. The eligible tourist cycle paths are defined in Law no. 208 of 28 December 2015.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 466.6 million.

As part of this investment, the GRAB project is a 50 km circular cycle path in Rome aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and mobility while enhancing the city's historical, cultural, and environmental heritage. It combines existing and newly constructed sections and connects major landmarks such as the Colosseum, Appian Way, and Villa Borghese. Integrated with Rome’s public transport system, it intersects metro, tram, and train lines, facilitating intermodal use and encouraging daily cycling. Recognized as part of the national tourist cycleway system, the GRAB is included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and linked to the 2025 Jubilee. It supports urban regeneration by improving infrastructure, green areas, and accessibility while helping to reduce pollution and promote social inclusion. Approved in December 2023, the final design ensures compatibility with other urban projects and includes features like dedicated bike lanes, shared sidewalks, and restored park paths, contributing to a new vision of urban mobility.

This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 14.884.521,39.
