he project aims to decarbonise energy consumption at the headquarters of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) in Madrid through the deployment of a large-scale geothermal system. The installation includes 106 geothermal wells distributed across three fields, providing a total thermal capacity of 1.2 MW for heating and cooling.
The investment amounts to EUR 4.3 million under the Recovery and Resilience Facility and forms part of the Energy Transition Plan for the General State Administration. The project also integrates complementary measures such as photovoltaic installations, building envelope improvements and energy efficiency upgrades.
The project is currently under implementation and is expected to be completed in 2026. Once operational, it will reduce fossil fuel consumption significantly, cutting CO₂ emissions by more than 50% and lowering non-renewable energy use, while improving overall energy efficiency and sustainability of public infrastructure.
