The reservoir, a historical claim of the region, will guarantee the water supply to the population in the municipalities of Alter do Chão, Avis, Crato, Fronteira, Gavião, Nisa, Ponte de Sor and Sousel, covering the needs of around 55,000 people and the irrigation of around 5,500 hectares. The project also envisages a photovoltaic plant and a mini-hydro plant.
