The investment tackles the considerable water losses in Slovenia resulting from the aging water infrastructure. The investment will establish modern drinking water supply systems with low energy consumption and a low Infrastructure Leakage Index, alongside renovating existing drinking water supply systems to reduce energy consumption and minimize leakage.
By January 2024, the Slovenian authorities issued 79 decisions on co-financing projects carried out by municipalities. 31 decisions were issued for projects on water supply systems for areas below 10,000 inhabitants and 48 decisions for projects on water supply systems for areas below 2,000 population units (PUs).
These projects adhere to specific criteria, including reducing energy consumption for the newly constructed drinking water supply systems and leakage by more than 20%. Through these efforts, the investment will enhance the overall efficiency and sustainability of Slovenia's water supply infrastructure.
The Recovery and Resilience Facility provides funding of EUR 26.7 million. Average co-financing is around 42%.
Several projects are alredy finalised. The last ones will be completed by August 2026.
