The objective of the initiative was to launch a large digitalisation wave in the cultural institutions, thus preserving Austria´s cultural heritage and making their archives more accessible to a wider public. It consists of a funding programme and the relaunch of Kulturpool, the central online platform for Austria´s cultural heritage.
The Federal Ministry of Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport launched the funding programme "Kulturerbe digital" with a budget of EUR 15 million. The Ministry published two calls, applications were possible from 21 November 2022 until 31 January 2023 and from 25 October 2023 until 29 February 2024.
As a result of the funding programme more than 680 000 cultural and art objects (incluging over 1700 analogue films and 61 000 3D objects) from 103 institutions have been digitalised by the end of 2025.
Since its relaunch in March 2024 Kulturpool functions as the central search and service platform, bringig together these digitalised cultural objects. With the combination of browsing through objects and editorial content, it addresses a variation of interested groups like researchers, "culture snackers" and stakeholders, but also young people.
