The project's primary objective is to restore the cultural monument, thereby expanding the tourist offerings of the city of Ptuj. The restoration of the Grajska kašča granary is pivotal, as it opens up all buildings of Ptuj Castle to the public and makes the castle hill more accessible to visitors.
The castle granary, dating back to the 18th century, will undergo comprehensive renovation to serve as an exhibition area and archaeological depository. The refurbishment includes additional spaces for uninventoried artifacts, a lapidarium, temporary exhibition spaces, service facilities, and a stone restoration workshop. This project stands as the most significant state investment in the cultural heritage of Ptuj in decades.
Financial support for this initiative is provided by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, contributing EUR 5.2 million to a project valued at EUR 6.4 million in total.
The unveiling of renovation plans for the castle took place in January 2023, with works commencing in 2024 and scheduled to conclude in June 2026. The renovated museum is anticipated to welcome its first visitors in the summer of 2026.
In summary, this project not only preserves and enhances a valuable cultural monument but also transforms Ptuj Castle into a more vibrant and accessible destination for locals and tourists alike.
