  • Project

Caput Mundi Next Generation EU for touristic great events (Mission 1, Component 3, Investment 4.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan increases the number of accessible tourist sites in Rome, creating valid and qualified tourist and cultural alternatives with respect to the crowded central areas, as well as increasing the use of digital technologies, enhance green areas and the sustainability of tourism. The investment envisages six lines of interventions:
1. “Roman Cultural Heritage for EU-Next Generation”, covering the regeneration and restoration of cultural and urban heritage and complexes of high historical-architectural value of the city of Rome;
2. “Jubilee paths” (from pagan to Christian Rome), targeted to the enhancement, safety, anti-seismic consolidation, restoration of places and buildings of historical interest and archaeological pathways;
3. #LaCittàCondivisa, covering the redevelopment of sites in peripheral areas;
4. #Mitingodiverde, covering interventions on parks, historical gardens, villas and fountains;
5. #Roma 4.0, covering the digitalization of cultural services and the development of apps for tourists;
6. #Amanotesa, aimed at increasing the supply of cultural offer to peripheries for social integration.

The investment is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility by EUR 500 million and includes this project.
The project focuses on developing an accessible archaeological area at the Templum Pacis, integrating it with the Imperial Fora and Trajan's Markets via new walkways and connections. Key interventions include archaeological excavation, conservative restoration and safety measures for ancient structures, and the creation of accessible visitor itineraries with lifts and a "bridge" connection. The area will also see new electrical and lighting systems, along with museum arrangements and educational displays. This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 2691000. The intervention will take place in the archaeological excavation of the north-eastern sector of the Templum Pacis. An archaeological area will be created, accessible from various points and fully usable. Visitors will be able to access the Templum Pacis from Trajan’s Column, from Largo della Salara Vecchia, from the Torre dei Conti, and from the Forum of Nerva. This way, the Templum Pacis and, through a circuit of walkways, the entire complex of the Imperial Fora and Trajan’s Markets will become accessible. Furthermore, the two sectors of the Templum Pacis brought to light in 1998-2000 could be joined through the creation of a "bridge" connection.

Specifically, the project involves the implementation of the following works: archaeological excavation; conservative restoration of ancient and post-ancient structures; safety measures, anti-seismic and static monitoring of ancient and post-ancient structures; creation of accessible itineraries for visitors (walkways and a lift; and, later, on the opposite side, a "bridge" connection on the route of the ancient Via di S. Lorenzo in Miranda); electrical and lighting systems; museum creation, arrangement works, and educational communication of archaeological areas.
