Modernising tram fleets

(reference C1.4.R4-I2 in the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Plan)

The goal of this investment, supported by EUR 60 million from the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Plan, is to modernise the tram fleet in Osijek and Zagreb, in order to provide a better quality and faster public transport service and increase the number of passengers using public transport, which will ultimately result in a reduction of CO2 emissions in traffic. The investment includes the modernisation of tram traffic through the procurement of at least 30 modern low-floor/semi-low-floor trams in the cities of Osijek and Zagreb. The grant agreement for the financing of 20 trams in Zagreb, amounting to EUR 40 million, was signed in December 2022 and the grant agreement for the financing of 10 trams in Osijek, amounting to EUR 20 million, was signed in February 2023.

Building a solar-powered cable ferry Križnica

(reference C1.4.R3-I3 in the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Plan)

The village of Križnica and the town of Pitomača are connected daily by a cable ferry that maintains communication between Križnica and other parts of Pitomača Municipality in Virovitica Podravina County. The cable ferry is of vital importance for the life of residents in Križnica since there is no road that connects Križnica with the Municipality of Pitomača. Due to an increasing need for population mobility, it was necessary to modernise the cable ferry in order to ensure greater safety of navigation and more environmentally friendly transport. With the support of EUR 762,000 from the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Plan, a solar-powered electric cable ferry will be put in operation in the first half of 2023. This measure is a great example of a small investment with a significant impact on improving the welfare of the community.

Upgrading digital diagnostics of KBC Split

(reference C5.1 R1-I4 in the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Plan)

The upgrade of the digital image diagnosis of KBC Split contributes to improving healthcare in the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of diseases, especially cancer. The investment increases the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all categories of patients, which will additionally shorten the waiting lists. It also improves clinical outcomes, and provides earlier and better-quality diagnostics, especially in paediatric and oncological patients. It digitalises health services and processes, ensures transparency in health service delivery, optimises the use of the resources of the hospital system and ensures future financial stability. The investment adapted the space to host the newly acquired medical equipment, including magnetic resonance 3T, neuro-intervention digital DSA angio-room, digital diascopic RTG machine and endoscopic gastroenterological room.

Construction and equipping of logistic and distribution centre for fruit and vegetables in Osijek – Baranja County

(reference C1.5. R1-I1 in the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Plan)

The objective of the investment, worth EUR 97 million, is to build and equip four logistics and distribution infrastructure centres for fruit and vegetables by end-June 2026, thereby improving the competition in the agricultural and food sector.  The logistic distribution centres will contribute to reducing food loss and waste and will use renewable energy sources for their operation.

One of the centres has already been built in Osijek, co-financed by EUR 10 million from the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Fund. The construction of this centre is one of the basic prerequisites for connecting small producers in the Osijek-Baranja County and the wider region of Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem to become more competitive by enabling them to offer their products throughout the year. The distribution centre has a storage capacity of over 3,000 tonnes, including 690 tonnes for eco products. This project was visited in December 2022 by Toma Šutić, member of EVP Šuica cabinet, and the Representation staff as part of the regional outreach during the First Recovery and Resilience Facility Annual Event.

Modernisation of a section of Zagreb suburban railway line

(investment C1.4 R2-I4 in the Croatian Recovery and Resilience Plan)

The objective of this EUR 29 million investment financed from the Croatian Recovery and Resilience plan is to modernise the railway section of Zagreb Kustošija – Zagreb Zapadni Kolodvor – Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor. This will improve the quality and availability of local and regional rail passenger transport, better integrate railways into the public transport system of the City of Zagreb, as well as increase the share of rail and local public transport in the wider area of Zagreb City.

The plan is to reconstruct and upgrade 3.4 kilometres of double track railway line within 18 months from the signing of the contract in October 2022. Upon its completion, along with the railway reconstruction project on the Savski Marof-Zagreb West Station section, which is nearing the end, trains will be able to travel at 120 km/h from the Slovenian border to the centre of Zagreb.
